The Alexandria Lakes Region
The best of all worlds: the Alexandria Lakes Area provides
unlimited access to the outdoors, small town hospitality and spirit...and at the same time, big city conveniences and opportunities.
Formed by the receding of at least 4 major glaciers nearly 20,000 years ago,
Alexandria Lakes Area is blessed with lakes and rivers, forests, meadows and rolling hills,
each contributing to the recreational bonanza enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
Famous for its lakes and fishing: There are also lots of other fun things to do and see.
Check out the Kensington Runestone.
Housed in Fort Alexandria in downtown Alexandria, it was found by an area farmer in 1878, or so the story goes.
The inscriptions on the stone indicate that the Vikings visited this area over 100 years before Columbus.
Fort Alexandria has a log cabin, store, church, 1805 school house, caboose, and large agricultural exhibit.
There is also a Native American exhibit filled with beautiful Ojibway and Dakota artifacts.
