Lakeshore Properties-Tutorial
Preservation of Natural Shorelines
Landscaping Restoration with native vegetation to preserve Minnesota waters.
The goal is the preservation and restoration of Minnesota's natural shorelines.
Proper lawn care near the shoreline is critical; plant and encourage wildflowers and native grasses.
This will improve water quality by filtering runoff, preventing erosion, and it will create natural habitat
Also, not mowing to the shoreline helps greatly! (see picture). The result: water quality is protected, natural habitat is provided, and the shoreline retains its natural beauty.
Shoreline - County Information
There are three Lake Classifications (based on size and depth):
General Development Lake (largest size, lowest restrictions)
Recreational Development Lake (medium size, medium restrictions)
Natural Environment Lake (smallest size, greatest restrictions)
Shoreland Alteration Permits are rquired for:
Construction of retaining walls
Repair or reconstruction of existing retaining walls
Movement of less than ten cubic yards of fill or soil outside of the impact zones in a residential shoreland district
Ice ridge removal
Sand beach area construction
Stairs to lake or river
Stairways and lifts are the preferred alternative to major topographic alterations for achieving access up and down bluffs and steep slopes to shore areas.
Stairways and lifts usually must meet certain County design requirements.
Canopies or roofs are often not be allowed on stairways, lifts or landings, depending on the County ordinances.
Although facilities such as certain kinds of ramps, lifts or mobility paths for physically handicapped persons are allowed for achieving access to shore areas.
Alterations of vegetation and topography should prevent erosion into public waters, fix nutrients, preserve shoreland aesthetics, preserve historic values, prevent bank slumping and protect fish and wildlife habitat.
Many Counties require that wetland acreage lost as a result of a topographical alteration be replaced in accordance with the provisions of the Wetlands Conservation Act.
